2:19PM - 302: lj_dev

In the interests of consolidating all FotoBilder development-related discussion, we're going to be closing down this community. The same conversations we've been having here can instead be posted to lj_dev.

lj_dev will be the place for everything related to LiveJournal/FotoBilder development topics. This includes both the code itself, client development, as well as installing the code. So, feel free to join the community and participate. :)

1:20AM - Development stalled?

Is the development of Fotobilder held? Stalled? I am asking because there is no activity on the community and there is no link to the Fotobilder source code at the main page at danga.com.

If your paid account expires, do your scrapbook pictures expire with it? Hopefully they aren't immediately purged.. :[

Does FotoBilder works with Apache2? I installed all the required modules on my debian sarge, and when I restart my apache server, it dies horribly with this:

[Wed Oct 25 00:58:32 2006] [error] Can't locate object method "boot" via package "mod_perl" at /usr/lib/perl5/Apache/Constants.pm line 8.\nCompilation failed in require at /usr/lib/perl5/Apache.pm line 6.\nBEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/perl5/Apache.pm line 6.\nCompilation failed in require at /home/fb/lib/startup.pl line 7.\nBEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /home/fb/lib/startup.pl line 7.\nCompilation failed in require at (eval 3) line 1.\n

9:28PM - Scrapbook question

Is there any way to download whole photo galleries from LJ scrapbook onto your computer?

I uploaded a bunch of photos from my cousin's house using the XP publishing wizard, but now that I'm back home I would like to have copies of the originals on my own computer. I don't want to get each image using the old "right-click and save as" trick in internet explorer because that would take forever. I would like to find a faster way to download the whole gallery all at once, like something similiar to an FTP. Are there any tools out there that can help me do this?

I can use fotobuilder to upload photos in bulk, but is there any way I can use it (or something else) to download them?

Damn, wouldn't that be awesome if we could FTP into our livejournal accounts somehow to download our old journal entries and pictures? Sounds like a nifty little project for one of my amazingly talented programmer friends.

11:56PM - Broken X-FB-Auth support in Apache/FotoBilder/Pic.pm

I noted a broken X-FB-Auth support in the Pic.pm module. Here is a fix:

+++ lib/Apache/FotoBilder/Pic.pm        Mon Jun  5 23:52:15 2006

     # need to see if there's a reference to this picture in some gallery
     # that the remote user has access to view

+    return 403 unless $up->visible_to($remote);

my $palspec; # palette colors, set if $extra begins with '/p'
my $g; # pic to serve (FB::Gpic object)
(Error existed because Upic::visible just calls FB::get_remote() to get $remote, without checking X-FB-Auth.)

But I'm not sure, can such fix cause some security problems?

12:58AM - issues on the gallery page

I have 7 galleries, but on the main gallery page, it only shows 5 of them, unless I chose to view them by 'alphabetically' or by 'recently updated'. Is there a way to fix this so that all my galleries show up when I send people to view them?

2:29AM - Improved resize techniques

I always hated doing by hand things that can be automated. One of such things is preparing photos for web - resizing, sharpening etc. Stock Fotobilder can resize photos, but they sometimes greatly loss in quality (especially details) due to standard ImageMagick (bilinear?) resize. On of the well-knowing techniques is a resizing photo step-by-step, sharpening it on every step. It produces result almost equivalent to simple resize + sharpen, but small details are more sharp.

So, I replaced simple resize to such advanced resize on my fotobilder setup.

Source code changes - maybe somebody wil interested in itCollapse )

does fb function if mod_perl is compiled in as a dso instead of staticly?

I've just been messing with my apache, and recompiled everything, and now FB doesn't work.

Line 1023 of lib/FB/User.pm is the first failure point...
at my $db = @FB::MEMCACHE_SERVERS ? FB::get_db_writer() : FB::get_db_reader();

Now i havn't changed any of my FB settings, and I only have a master setup, so any ideas?

11:22AM - Problem processing images from a Nokia 6610i

I apologise in advance if this is the wrong place to post this.

I originally logged an LJ support request here.

There are other "similar" requests pending here and here. Although they may be different types of phones.

After further investigation, it appears to be a problem with the way fotobilder processes the images.

Using scrapbook to rotate an image generates the following message

"error instantiating image from scalarref: Exception 425: Corrupt JPEG data: 158 extraneous bytes before marker 0xd9"

I'm guessing that the same image processing objects are reused in vaious parts of the system - generating thumbnails, scaled views and the like, and that because of the unexpected data the code doesn't work.

A sample of one such image is http://pics.livejournal.com/loom/pic/000093z5/

I see that ScrapBook is having difficulties following the LJ data centre move, but because of that I noticed a small thing that someone may want to fix at some point. I got a 500 error trying to load a picture from pics.livejournal.com and the 500 error page told me to contact webmaster@picpix.com which doesn't seem right.

Any word on when our hard-working Fotobilder developers will be able to offer increased storage capacity?

Is there any way (other than going in an doing a quick sql statement) to re-order a gallery by filename?
I uploaded alot of pictures at random intervals yesterday, and today started to reorder them by filename (long story, mostly some pictures i had on my card, and uploaded from someones computer while i was out, some i had at home, i uploaded after).

If not, i'll try to get around to making a quick patch todo so, its a pretty useful feature for this type of event.

(that and bump the extension patch)

1:40AM - Extension patch for FB

Patch: http://kodekoan.com/patches/fotobilder/imageextensions-v8.diff
Live Site: http://pics.halkeye.net

I've been working with whitaker for a while now on this patch, which I thought was done couple weeks ago, but I found another bug tonight.
Since the LJ crew is still pretty busy, I figured i'd go the peer review method, and hope someone else can spot some bugs I've missed.

BTW, this is the one that would allow you to post in those forums and other programs that only allow urls based on extensions. (so now will add .jpg and such).

Thanks people.

Asked what it exactly does, so i'll provide some examples.

As you can see fairly straight forward. Adds extensions to each image, as well as changed the "extra" field to be in the filename instead of being the filename (/directory/anotherdir/filename.ext style)

Three quick questions:
1) How does admin priv get initially assigned? -- I don't know how to do it, doesn't seem to be documented, etc.
2) Why are passwords stored in clear text? This isn't 'safe'?
3) Is there a good way to search communities a little better? Google only sort of works barely. ;)

I'm trying to get fotobilder working from CVS and... Well it's not working. Using fedora core 3, with Apache 1.3.33. I get this in the error log:

[Wed Jul 13 18:11:51 2005] [error] Can't call method "set_servers" on an undefined value at /home/fb/lib/FB/MemCache.pm line 27.\n

Any ideas? I've read over the install doc and there is no reference to MemCache.

Edit (2005-07-16): The cause of this problem is 'PerlFreshRestart On' in the httpd.conf file. Seems to introduce other kinds of bugs too. (Doesn't look like stuff is getting initialized.)

9:33PM - OpenID in FotoBilder

Today I blew the dust off my old FotoBilder install and started to take a look at what it would take to add OpenID consumer support, mostly just by ripping off the guts of the OpenID consumer support in LiveJournal. My plan is essentially to have a configuration option for the “domain” that OpenID identities should have their user accounts magically created in and otherwise to do pretty-much exactly what LiveJournal does. A few extra issues, though:

Well, that was just a messy load of thoughts. Hopefully some of it will spur discussion. ;)

12:58PM - Thumbnails problem

10:58PM - Thumbnail system is despicable

I've been all over the net for an hour trying to find a way to stop the double clicking problem and I have yet to find an answer.

Look at this: http://pics.livejournal.com/utils/gallery/0000bb4x?page=1

It's a huge pain in the ass for anybody to read that because first they have to click on a thumbnail THEN CLICK ON ANOTHER THUMBNAIL! Then they have to hit backspace then click next and the fun starts all over.

Is there NO way to fix this? Unfortunatly ALL the galleries have this problem.

Why can't the thumbnail lead to THE ACTUAL PICTURE and not a second thumbnail?

FOR all the ranting and raving about S2, it isn't flexible at all!

Another feature i was wondering about is linking with gallery names.

something along the lines of http://pics.livejournal.com/halkeye/gal/screenshots

named gallery links, its alot easier to remember than than the gallery key.

Not as high up on the list as the extensions, but its worth discussing.
